Special Note
August 8, 2007

I've been meaning to mention if someone wants their piece to be critiqued--meaning have the others  advise what could be better or different about it, etc., please say so when  you post your link.  I know everyone isn't comfortable being critiqued, but some do depend on it. Just wanted to make sure the workshop is useful for everyone....

Also, if you have a challenge idea, please let me know.  JO

Another Picture Challenge
August 8, 2007

Words and Pictures!

Interpret one of  the paintings below, your choice, with verse, story, or essay. Any length, form, or genre. Let your imagination go wild. To know more about the paintings, go here; although I would prefer you do not let the reality of the scene depicted come into your piece. Just see them as nameless people and go from there.

OR

Enjoy!

Essay Challenge--You don't have to be a poet!
August 7, 2007

ESSAY CHALLENGE

This challenge is to reveal more about yourself. Your choice of two essay topics:

1. My Favorite Job

2. My Most-Admired Relative

I'm making this challenge something anybody can join in on. You don' t have to be poet or a short story writer. You just need a life! lol.

Describe the job or relative and explain why it is what it is.  Let us know a little about yourself  through these stories. It may be as long or short as you like, but help us understand why it is your favorite job or most-admired relative.  Enjoy!

The Jozzonet
August 6, 2007

Okay, after our little foray into hemorrhoids, dental clinics, and sheep, it's time for a more intellectual challenge, a Jozzonet.

The Jozzonet is a Dutch form, developed by Joz Knoop. The Jozzonet has an odd number of lines. The middle line of the poem functions as mirror. It can be any length. Rhyme not necessary.

The Topic for this challenge: Summer Heat OR The Forgotten Road, your choice.

An example:

STORMY WEATHER

Whooshing cascades sweeping motion
in rhythm with thunderous commotion
as electric shocks the world
in a sky painted dismal gray
as electric shocks the world
in rhythm with thunderous commotion
whooshing cascades sweeping motion

The Words & Picture Challenge
August 5, 2007

Drawing Words from Other Creative Outlets

Okay, now here is a challenge that should even make Bob take pause. Study the picture above, The Dining Room, by impressionistic painter, Paul Signac. Consider all the details while you search for inspiration.

Write whatever you like from this painting. It can be a poem, a story, an essay, whatever suits your fancy. Try more than one if your name is Bob. If you want to try one of the older challenges first, and try this later, that's okay. I'm a bit behind myself. There are a couple older ones I still want to do.

Good luck, everyone!

Sunday Challenge (or Whenever!)
August 5, 2007

Sunday Challenge
(For whenever you can get to to it)

And it will be a challenge! Write a TV commercial script.  Sell the viewer your line of either:

a. Your line of hemorrhoid  relief pads, or

b. Your dental clinic, or

c. Your PBS station--make the viewer contribute. It's Pledge time.

* * *

There that should keep Bob...errr, I mean us busy.

Don't forget to post the URL in comments!

The Dodoitzu Writing Challenge
August 4, 2007
Enjoy writing challenges--share your work--have fun! And it's free!
Musecrafters Writing Workshop

Many thanks to Paisley for this suggestion:  The Dodoitzu

The Dodoitsu is a fixed folk song form of Japanese origin and is often about love or humor. It has 26 syllables made of of four lines of 7, 7, 7, 5 syllables respectively. It is unrhymed and non-metrical.

Example:

Doctor's Office

Hot, despite white-haired patients
Icicles of silver age
Inching, uncertain small steps
To see the doctor.

...Copyright 2005 JO Janoski

You can be funnier with your poem than my example. I just kind of pulled that out of my files this morning. I wrote it waiting in the doctor's office one day, and I didn't feel so jovial. As usual, post a link to your entry in the comments. Don't forget to leave the URL!

The other challenges are still open, so if you still want to do one, please do. I haven't finished with them myself yet.

Try a Cinquain!
August 1, 2007
I have two writing prompts to offer up today. Feel free to do either or both.

The first is for anyone who would like to try poetry in a carefully structured form, in this case, the cinquain.  The second prompt is free verse. Once you've posted your poem,  be sure to come back here and post the link to it in the comments of section of this page.

The topic is the color blue--make of it whatever you wish as to meaning. Examples: blue sky, blue flowers, blue mood, and so on--write about blue something in a cinquain and/or a free verse.

A Short Explanation of the Cinquain:
The cinquain is a much-loved form of poetry. It's short,  yet expressive, a favorite of many poets.
A cinquain contains five lines and a total of 22 syllables.

The poem is unrhymed.

This is how you form the cinquain:

Line 1: 2 syllables
Line 2: 4 syllables
Line 3: 6 syllables
Line 4: 8 syllables
Line 5: 2 syllables
An example:

Robin
Cocked head, red breast
Listening to senses
Catching my breath, I wait with him
For worms.

Come one! Come all! Bring your ideas with you!
July 31, 2007
Welcome to Musecrafters Writing Workshop, a blog I've set up to be home base for writing prompts and challenges offered up not only by me, but by all Musecrafters members.

I intend to post writing prompts from both you and me. I personally will present prompts at regular intervals. And at the same time, in the comments section, Musecrafter members can post their suggestions for writing prompts or challenges. The writing prompts can be poems, stories, scripts, essays...whatever writing form suits your fancy. The topics may be whatever you would like, within the confines of good taste, of course. When you leave a prompt idea in the comments section, I will make a new blog entry for your idea to get the ball started.

From these prompts all members of Musecrafters are welcome to try their luck at them. Each writer will post his efforts in his own blog, and leave a link for it in the comment page for the original prompt. Other members can follow the link to read his work and comment on it.

In this way, we can share our writing, make comments, and get to know each other better. Let's get to work! First prompt is coming soon! If you have an idea for a writing challenge right now, just leave a comment and we'll get it started, too.
