Recently, the Hartville Police Officer was assaulted by a man with a knife. The officer is fine, he was uninjured, the other man however was put in the hospital. It started out as "routine." the dispatcher had gave the officer the call to simply  go to this address and speak to such person. Had the dispatcher taken some more information like he's supposed to, he would have known he was sending the officer to a domestic in which one subject was armed and intoxicated. But he didn't. So the officer knocked on the door, nothing unusual. It was a residence several of us have been to numerous times, but none of us have had any problems there witht these subjects for several years. They called on each other a lot, but nothing serious. The officer got told to come in, and he does. He steps inside and begins talking to the man in the living room when another male comes out from another room directly beside the officer and takes a big swing right at the officer's jugular using a ten-inch butcher knife. Eitehr by luck, intoxication or a little faith, the knife missed by mere inches. Given the close quarters, the officer knew he could not possibly get his gun out before the attacker had another chance to strike so he grasped a hold of the attacker's knife wrist with both hands in a desperate struggle to stay alive. The officer did a side kick into the attacker's side of the knee, snapping his leg like a twig. Not willing to give even a moment, the officer jerked hard on the wrist, flipping the attacker over the shoulder of the officer and slamming the attacker to the ground, knocking out three teeth. The officer then managed to knock the knife loose while at the same time dislocating the attacker's shoulder. Within seconds, handcuffs securely restrained the attacker face down on the floor. The fight was over, the officer's training and instincts had prevailed. I'm glad he survived, he is a true friend of mine.

I'm glad he was ok. He should have never been sent by himself and there should be consequences for those who chose, or been given orders, to not respond.
