Nobody's Hero

Eighteen Two

The car zooms past,
     weaving, it starts to slow.
It's too late, he was spotted
he's in trouble, he already knows.

The lights quickly come on,
     first red, followed by blue.
He steps on the gas,
     not knowing what to do.

What started as a joyride
     soon turns to disaster.
The pursuit has now begun
     as he decides faster, faster.

It all ends quite abruptly,
     a screech, then a halt.
He knows he is going to jail,
he knows it's all his fault.

If he only wouldn't have done it,
if he only would have came to a stop
he might have gotten off lucky,
It might have been a lazy cop.

His life now lies in ruin,
"I was drunk" he had to admit.
Now the officer must tell a mother
     her daughter had been hit.

"It's all my fault, I'm so sorry,
     he is just a kid.
Now, because of me, just look,
     look at what he did."

She did not blame the officer,
     no not one bit.
She knew he was trying to protect her,
     her daughter that got hit.

She asked who he was,
but in her heart she already knew.
It was her daughter's boyfriend,
     he was eighteen too.

He had went out drinking with a buddy,
she had begged him to please stop.
He told her "I'll be fine, don't worry,
I won't get caught by no dumb cop."

She had left to find him,
she had news she had to tell.
No he'll always know,
as he sits alone in jail.

No man-made punishment
     would every truly due.
For he was only eighteen,
     but already had killed two.

Written by me, while sitting in the E.R. with an inmate early this morning.

I loved the poem. You are such a good author. You're post may be few and far between but they are worth the wait... even though I REALLY wish you would post more.
