Changes in the Business World that attack us all
Yesterday I stopped by the local quick-stop to fill up with gas before heading to Springfield to see our new grandchild. I have been doing business at this place for quite some time as I had to quit doing business at the other place in town because of one employee there. I had written countless number of checks for the amount of the gas/fuel I had purchased. I wrote a check yesterday and then the girl ran it through some sort of machine and came up with a slip of paper for me to sign. I said "What?" She told me that I would need to sign the paper and then she would return the check. I read the slip of paper and it said that if my check bounced (it was in the sum of $20.50) that I was giving them permission to take not only the $20.50 but also another $37.00 out of my bank. Needless to say I simply refused to sign the paper. Anyone that goes along with this system is part of the problem. I knew my check would not bounce but we all know that glitches do occur from time to time and by the time I would have discovered a glitch it would be six weeks later and my word against someones. I am not going to set myself up to be robbed. Did you realize that if you do sign and give them the authority to garnish your account that they can do that quite easily and once they have your money you will have a hard time getting it back.. I am not going to play that game. I refused to sign - period. She called someone and asked them if I had to sign and of course they told her I did. I am not blaming the hired help at the counter and I stayed very calm and smiling during the ordeal. She then had to learn how to unpost the check and the charge to my account. I sure hope she got it right. It took about twenty minutes of me standing there waiting. I was glad it was a Sunday and that a long line did not gather. She finally got finished and I offered her a credit card with which to pay my bill and then when the transaction was complete I informed her that I would not be back. Wal-Mart did that to me one time last year when they first started the same insanity and I simply gave them their product back but since the gas was in my tank I could not very well just give it back and walk away.
Refuse to be done that way. The permission you give them is a form of coercion that one must simply refuse. Why would anyone grant permission to some two-bit company to access their checking account? Do not be a sheeple - we have to take control by voting with our pocketbooks. We can't make a business take our check the proper way but we damn sure can refuse to do business with them any longer.
