Sunset in 3 parts
The setting sun baths the sky in colour
The soft reds and oranges don't just paint a background
But become it, lighting the few wisps of clouds in hues
That are only of that moment
Shades only seen once if you're fortunate to see them that day
Clouds purple on one side and shaded pale on its near side
And then everything changes
The sky bursts forth in other shades of red, orange, and purple
The brush strokes of heaven are evident on the smallest surfaces
Even the duller plumaged birds that take flight are bathed in breath of colour
Any reflective surface has a sheen of red
And just as quickly as all is aglow
Then it all returns to the faded shade of evening
He starts his car in the light of day and drives out of the carpark at dark
His day is not over though
There's stories to read and kids to bathe and put to bed
This is his best time of day
Then it's back to finishing the endless reports of studies that seem to go on
Forever
What day is this and when are those due
He sees his daughter's smile and hears his son's voice
Recalling his latest adventure
This is as more as it gets
He undoes his tie and spreads hugs around
She looks up at the sky and takes a sip of her drink
The clear liquor sends a warm feeling down her neck
She smiles at the sky
Today's over and the news was bad but that is behind her
And what future she has is ahead
Time was when she would have panicked about all of this
She drains her glass and pushes it towards the waiter and nods for another
How does she tell her family and friends is not in her head
Tomorrow is only a distant thought
Tonight is her last time to live without dealing with it
The sky turns to colors she has not seen since she was a small child
She stood on a beach wondering what it would be like to be an adult
She still wondered what that would be like
