"To become a teacher" was what I thought in my head.
Being in a classroom where most of us are education majors he asked this next question..
"Why do you want to teach?" What a simple question with a complex answer.
I've been thinking about these questions since my classes Wednesday night. My answer might not be what most people answer. Sure, I want to be a teacher for all of the obvious reasons. To make a difference, To do something I love, To have summers off :) There are two big reasons that combine together that really make me want to be a teacher. Here are my reasons.
First and foremost is that I want to become a teacher to show children that they are worth being someone. They don't have to do what everyone else around them is doing or maybe the good or bad choices that their parents made. They are worth doing what they love. They are worth going as far as they want to go and the way to get there is education. People can take a lot of things from you but they can't take what's inside, not without you letting them.
This brings me to my second reason. How can I tell my children that they can be anything they want to be, and that starts with a good education, if I'm not willing to follow as well? Is it hard? Heck yes, but if I can do it while working and having 4-6 children then they can do it. I must lead by example and that starts with my education. Sure, it might not be the most glamorous job or the best paying but it's what I wanted to do and I'm going for it. When I look them in the eye and tell them that it will be hard but it will be worth it, I want to mean it. I want them to look at me and think "If she can do it so can I."
They can do it.
They are worth it!
I will show them.
