Since Ive lastwritten I've been in Florence, Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, Positano, the Almalphi coast, Athens, Delphi and Olympia! Ive been traveling around like crazy and having the time of my life. I just got home from a roadtrip around western greece! I think the best way to approach this is telling you about some of my favorite places! Florence: I did a bike tour through Tuscany and it was absolutely stunning! We stopped at a winery to see the making of Chianti and olive oil. Then we had traditional tuscan lunch on the countryside and continued biking. As you can imaging by the end of the tour a few people were quite drunk and could no longer bike! It was hilarious. Florence is also the home of the statue of David, and it was beautiful. The technique of the sculpture is flawless. Rome: Was one of my favorite cities that Ive been to. It was always busy and there were loads of tourist things to do. I stayed for about five days and didn't even put a dent into them. Regardless, my favorite was definately the colosseum! It was very well preserved and I took a guided tour about the histroy of the gladiator and animal matches. It was erie to peer into the fighting arena and imagine humans fighting to the death. I also spent several hours touring Palatine Hill the ruins of ancient Rome. Sorrento, Capri, Positano, and the Almalphi Coast: I am going to lump these together as the most beautiful places in the world. These cites are situated south of Naples and are along the coast of southern italy. They are quaint little towns and the people are very friendly. They consist of brightly colored buildings built into the cliffs on the coastline. The roads are narrow; at any second you could tumble off the cliff to your death! This causes a considerable amount of stress when driving around steep corners! I spent a few days on the beach taking in the scenery. I think my time spent in southern italy has been the best so far! I can't remember a time that anything has ever made me feel happier! The food is delicious, but I find it to be very limiting. It is carb central and its virtualy impossible to eat anything without pasta or bread for less than 15 euro. Ouch! My bank account and my body have definately fallen victim to Italy! Pompei: These ruins are amazing. The whole city is preserved and there are unbeatable artifacts. After seeing pompei, no ruins will ever measure up! Naples: Naples is the dirtiest city that I have ever been to! There is a garbage strike going on, so there are piles of garbage on every corner! It is also relatively unsafe and it is not uncommon for there to be bullet proof glass on the stores that line the streets. This creeped me out a bit, and I never walked around that city alone! However, I do have to admit that I had the best pizza of my life at a napolitan pizzaria! Athens, Olympia, and Delphi: When I arrived in Athens I met a group of grad students from UCLA at my hostel. We really hit it off and the next day we rented a van and took a roadtrip around western Greece! We had the time of our lives and the scenery was breathtaking! Greece is covered in the Atlas mountains and it makes for unbeatable views. It still stuns me to see ocean in front of me and mountain behind me! Delphi was more ruins, but is significant because it was the place that the ancient greek oracles lived and were consulted. Its cool too see some of the places that you see in films. Anceint Olympia was also fun, although not nearly as well preserved as some of the ruins Ive seen. I saw the ruins of the statue of Zeus, an ancient wonder of the world. Also, I saw the rock on which the flame is lit every season of the olympics. I have to admit, I am starting to get a bit burnt out of all the European ruins; Egyptian pyramids will be a nice change! Now, I am back in Athens and I set sail for the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykanos tomorrow. Im am in some need of good sun and a drink! Haha! I am very excited to relax for a couple of days. Then its off to Egypt next Thursday! Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 2 of 7 } { Next Page } |
